Hello.... I just installed the 1.6 and get the same error as others mentioned:

Convert image file: karenpinkdress.gif (242x538) ....  
   Error converting image file!


and

Create thumbnail for: Karen (karenpinkdress.gif) ....  
   Error creating thumbnail!


I checked and the safe_mode is off.  Was there another reason for this?

ok.. nevermind.... i got it to work finally.  Just making sure all are jpgs .. not gifs.
