I think the best way is to download a template and to learn how it works and then you can change it or create one with the new knowledge

It's not difficult but you must learn how it works

PS:
The frist page is the "templates/default/home.html", in which you can test simple things

it's only a tip

eg. Create a site and copy the stuff of your "home.html" in it, then rename it to "home.html" and see what
happens...
