Thumbnail Creation Problem 0 byte filesize

I am using netpbm as my image conversion utility.
when I use the autothumbnailer the thumbnails it creates have 0 bytes and they show up as red x's in the catagory display area.

any help would be great, when you go to the image view page though the fullsize image is display'd properly.
