Category view / Category bit

Hi,

Is there a way to have the categories show up one way on a left menu, then have the subcategories show up another way in the main body?

I have the categories running down the left side using (for instance):
<?php echo get_categories(1); ?>

But in the main body, I'd like to show the subcategories in a table grid with different individual category icons (e.g., 4 columns across, "x" rows down)

I don't know how this would be accomplished...is it possible to have category_bit and a new category_bit2 for the main body?

Any help here or ideas would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

hmm.. you can install the mod gallery quicklist which wuold solve ur probs at least for about 60%
