sudden "403 forbidden" error on entire gallery

I've had 4images installed for over a year now and haven't had any problems to speak of. Then just last night, the gallery stopped working and all the pages (even the admin panel) now give this message:

403
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /gallery/ on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I can access all the files via FTP, and it seemed that some of the folder/file permissions had been mysteriously reset, so I corrected that -- but it didn't do any good.

Any ideas of other things I can try? I really don't want to have to do a complete reinstall, because I have quite a few images up there.

Okay, problem solved!

My advice to anyone else that gets this error message: talk to whoever runs your server and see if they can help. That's what worked for me.
