Problem with this Forum
« on: September 22, 2006, 02:36:28 PM »
Hello,
I enjoy using the Gallery, but I cant stand how unorganize this forum is. Especially your FAQs section.

First of all your FAQs is too clutter. The point of having a FAQs section is to have it organized with a short striaght to the point answer.

Example: Q? How Do I Add 3GP Format to Function In Gallery.
             Answer Should be just that.

Not a link to how to add the mp3 to function in the gallery, even though it's 99% similar, but it' still not the same. Or a smart comment to check FAQS, because if the FAQs was cleaned up it would be easier to find the answers needed.

Also disallow the reply option from the FAQs.

The point of FAQs is to have a simple answer to a question. Not to have 22 pages of various comments & coding to change/add function to in some cases something not even related to the topic at hand.

It should be:

FAQs

Q? How Do I Add 3GP Format To Function

A= In order to add 3GP & make it function you need to:

Steps

1. Go to folder/file & add (code)
2. Go to folder/file & add (code)
So on & so on

Thats it.

Then lock that section so no comments can be added.

Freq. Asked Questions is just that. Its the final answer you get from the various answer/comments/feedback from which supposed be from all the comments/ answers from a Help Section anyways.

Next your templates should be cat. by gallery version. This way it makes it easier for an indiviual to find a template for their version of the gallery. Even though people should update there gallery for security reasons. Some ppl live by the rule "If it aint broke then why fix it" I have a buddy who doesnt update his scripts everytime an update is out he waits until an upgrade is out.

Last & not least.

I notice some replies is in German & others in English. I usually translate those pages into English in order to read those. Why not have an English section & a German section and use the translate mod to automatically update each section with the updated questions/comments so both can benefit from the help.

Thank you for your feedback.

Though I have some comments:

there are thousants of extensions and create a tutorial for each of them would be simply stupid...thats why there is enough information on how to add A new extension with an example of .mp3
You want us change the example to .3gp - fine, but what would it change in usibilty of the topic? - NOTHING...

So, what you are saying, if a topic in FAQ wasnt clear enough for somebody they should start a new topic somewhere else on the forum? and then when next person have a question they should again start a new topic? - I dont think its such a good idea...The answer to the topic is always on top, whatever replys you see under it is something you dont need to worry about unless you are having problem following the answer...

Yes, I agree. And I guess we could add 4images versions to the templates are compatible with into the headline or something...
Unfortunetly this version of SMF forum does not support "aliases" for topics, so we can not have two or more sections with topics pointed into the same topic...so creating a new section for each 4images version were a list of supported templates will be showed is not quiet possible at the moment...

Yes, its a mess...but fortunetly we have as many answered topics in english as in german, so if you dont understand german, just avoid such topics...(btw, this is german software, so english a second language here ;))
If you know any working addons for this forum that could help in this task, we'd be cladly try them out.
We are waiting for SMF v1.1 final to come out, it supposedly will increase the usability of this forum...
Your first three "must do" before you ask a question:
Please do not PM me asking for help unless you've been specifically asked to do so. Such PMs will be deleted without answer. (forum rule #6)
Extension for Firefox/Thunderbird: Master Password+    Back/Forward History Tweaks (restartless)    Cookies Manager+    Fit Images (restartless for Thunderbird)

So the answer is straight to the point, instead of going through the mess of various coding of other members then finding out its wrong coding or incomplete, etc then by page 22 theres pieces of the correct code. After figuring out which is the right code in the first place.
And instead of making a tutorial of each extension. It could be a link to a main FAQ then followed by add that extension to folder/file & the array info.
For the newbies or inexperience programmers. That is why it would be helpful & that is the point.

No what I am saying is after a solution has been solved/resolved in a "Help" section. Then it should be simplified and added to the "FAQs" section. Most of the questions in the forum, start out with one one question then end up being multiple topics or questions with answers under one string/topic. And that is what makes the forum a mess. Especially when your using the search feature. I was doing a search on how to autoplay mp3 in the gallery & it brought up several hits, but once I select one of the hits, I found myself in the middle of an existing topic that was 7 pages deep of various stuff and had to piece together the info hoping it was going to work... That's not good!
The answer to my question was found after doing more research but if that answer was simplified & in the FAQs section it saves us both time and money. Even though it was related to MP3 shouldnt be combined with how to add a Mp3 extension or another topic at hand.
