I need a user management system for my site, but i need it to work with 4images too. For example, i want certain directories in my site to be protected, only registered users can access, i want peopple that registered for my gallery(4images) to be able to enter their user name and pass in the htaccess and be able to access the files. i want to put the login page in my layout too, is there any way to do that?

You don't need to use .htaccess to control category access, just edit the category permissions from the admin control panel.  We used to have a post about a login form outside of 4images, try searching for it.  You can also create a new custom template page that has just the login form.  You'll find that in the FAQ forum
