Installation, Update & Configuration / Main page {new_images}

Hello,
I aplogize in advance if someone has enquired about the following and a solution has been posted.
I am looking for a way to resize the new images on the main page, allowing for "multiple different variations" of sizes. For example if you have 3 new image shown on main page I would like to adjust the size of each individual image. I realize after searching the forum there are ways to adjust rows and columns by minipulating the index.php file, I was wondering if a slight variation within that file will accomplish my goals.
A simple fix could be to tag each image indvidually within the html code and adjust the image size, however that would limit the functionality of the application.
Any help is appreciated.
