Auto Thumbnail Genaration Help Please

I use 1and1 Linux hosting which comes with GD library as they claim
so why are my thumbnails not automatically generated. help please!!!!
I'm using version 1.7.4
I also set "Auto Create Thumbnail" set as yes

Thumbnails are only created when uploading images through the gallery. If you upload images from the Control Panel, you have to use the Autothumbnailer.

Just click "Auto-Thumbnailer" in your Control Panel. Here you can check your database for images with missing thumbnails and create them.

The Auto Thumbnailer dont seem to work in my cpanel like that one thread suggests.

I get this message:

GD library error.
Check module settings.
