Backing up my 4images galleries?

Hi, I was just wondering how to go about this.

Bear with me I'm a newbie :)
At the minute I've just downloaded my whole gallery via FTP, so I know that this will backup all my images and hanges I've made to templates and what not. I've also noted that in the ACP there's a backup database, how does this work, do I need to do that too?

Basically, if I downloaded my entire 4images gallery and all folders related to it, could I then wipe my site completely and then just upload it again and everything would still function? I'm trying to spring clean my site.

If I backup my databse with phpMyadmin is this the same as what you can use within the ACP?
