Problems with picture uploads

Hello,
I have installed everything correctly. I have GD on my server. Im getting a few problems when I try to upload a image.
Error uploading thumbnail file:
main_2.gif: Image width invalid

when i try to upload. The image is within its allowed poxels.
When I do it with out uploading the thumb it works. When I go in my admin ontroll Pannel to Validate the image
it says
Error adding image: 747-400 (main.gif)

Can someone help me

have you tryed other images, perhaps not .gif type?

and what are the max thumbnail dimentions set in the settings and the file you are trying to upload?

i got the pictures to upload now, when I go validate i get this error

Error adding image: d (sun.gif)

It looks to me like permissions issue. Make sure all files and folders CHMODed as instructed in docs/installation.txt
If SAFE MODE is turned on on your server, you'll need do additional steps:
