Chit Chat / page loads
« on: August 23, 2008, 06:30:20 PM »
do you wonder how long your page loads?
try this website i found.
http://tools.pingdom.com

it helps show you in real time what takes the longest to load and file size and more. and its free. i've used it a bunch of times for my 4image gallery.
give it a try and post your best page load time.
miraculously my best time was 1.96 seconds which i've never gotten again.
my more recent time was 7 seconds but i need to undo an experimental mod and compress javascript and try to cut back on html and scale down the thumbnails.

Chit Chat / Js-kit: comments, rating, reviews...more
« on: August 22, 2008, 07:28:23 PM »
i just saw this service called js-kit that uses javascript and simplifies commenting and rating.
im thinking of using it on my 4image site to simplify the commenting and rating
how do i use it for each individual image. i could only get it to work to rate one instance instead of for every image.

Mods & Plugins (Requests & Discussions) / Dynamic theme/template
« on: August 13, 2008, 09:27:16 PM »
i have changed the color of my site and the structure to everything is the same.
i was wondering if its not too far fetched to make the themes dynamic. like the day it could be white and at night it could be the black and also have a little link in the footer that would allow the viewer to pick the other color and it save in a cookie or possibly a session.

my idea is similar to igoogle's dynamic themes

heres an image of what i mean. something kind of like this but involving which template folder to what time it is.

if your still unclear feel free to reply telling me so.

Feedback & Suggestions / next update core features
« on: August 13, 2008, 08:42:20 PM »
I know its overambitious and maybe too soon to talk of the next major or minor update to the 4img core
but i thought i'd bring to your attention things i think should be default features for the 4img core.

Guestbook [with captcha too]

Maintenance Page [for fixes and updates, to notify your viewers that the site is temporarily down and to return shortly]

SEO Mod [doesn't have to be like this link but any seo that could be incorporated in core would be great]

Let visitors choose how to sort images

and

Tooltip for thumbnails

this is just my opinion, but i think this would be a nice addition to the image CMS.
can anyone else think of a mod that would be great to be built in to the core?

i maintain a flash game gallery and i often upload many games at once
but i want them to be released one each day or another time interval.
i was wondering if it was even remotely possible to enable a delayed publish system.

for example lets say i upload 7 games on Monday September 1st.
i want the 1st game to be activated on monday 9/1
the 2nd game activated tuesday 9/2.
3rd game activated wednesday 9/3.
and so on.

i have some idea on how this would be implemented but i am not an expert php coder and the core of 4image is still a bit of a mystery to me.
i was hoping someone could help me with this and that this could be of some use to other people as well.

if it were to work i think it would be an optional field when uploading an individual image possibly under "User" and over "Activate" or somewhere on that form page.

the sooner the better please. thank you in advanced.

Mods & Plugins (Requests & Discussions) / template/theme switcher?
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:11:16 PM »
i like my template so i made a copy in black and i plan on other colors in the future
people wanted a darker template so i inverted the colors

i was wondering:
is it possible to set up a theme switcher?
or let users pick the .css used on the pages from a small list of maybe 2 or 3 different themes.

i've tried on other projects but it only changed for one page with javascript and then it reverted back to the original css stylesheet with the original color.
im sure php is needed somehow but im not sure how exactly.
i want to make it more customizable allowing users to pick which color they want.
it is possible?

4images is amazing and really flexible it's one, if not the best image gallery cms i've ever seen and used,
but as more and more sites move to more flashy web 2.0 applications i think there should be some intergration of the Greybox image viewer.
for those who don't know what i am talking about here are a few links with examples.

http://www.apan.net/tools/grey/examples.html
http://www.phatfusion.net/lightbox/
http://www.huddletogether.com/projects/lightbox/
http://www.emanueleferonato.com/downloads/lightbox.html

It goes by 3 different names (greybox, lightbox, thickbox) but its all the same:
its a simple, unobtrusive script used to overlay images on the current page. It's a snap to setup and works on all modern browsers.
It acts like a pop-up but is powered by AJAX and is very light and best of all never encounters complications with pop-up blockers as the pop-up stays in the window.
if you confused on what i mean refer the example links above.
maybe there was a post on this before me or maybe this is on the bottom of the list of future features but i thought i'd bring it up.
it would make a great nice flashy fresh way to view images. it could be an alternative running along side as a link under the thumbnails.

just a suggestion...
