I have no direct, applicable knowledge on this but it might help others if you included the name of the graphics software you are using and its version number.

It doesn't look like there any mod involved here.  That site has Anime set up as a top level category and AMG, Hentai, etc as subcategories under that.  All that was done was to control the number of category columns displayed from the admin CP "Category settings" and to edit the category_bit.html template.  If you want more details, you should contact the web site owner to find out what HTML they used.

I'm just curious, why would you want to put 3000 images into a lightbox all at once? Why not just bookmark the URL of the category?  Is there some hidden purpose for this?   If so, there might be a different approach that would address your need

A fix for what?  I have no problem sending one email to 1000 members on my site at one time.  This sounds like a problem with your server configuration.

4images doesn't have that capability in its unmodified form, therefore a mod IS required

Sorry.  No such mod exists and 4image just doesn't let you set permissions on a per-user basis.  Your only no-code alternative is to do what you described- create their own personal user group and then set permissions on that group to disallow comments.

Do you have the cache engine enabled?  Performance was also affected by the new template parsing engine which has some tradeoffs...
