4images & server load
« on: January 28, 2003, 08:42:05 AM »
Hi

I created a site using 4images and I i'm receiing about more than 5000 hits a day. Great!

Now the problem. My hosting provider told me that my site it's creating a tremendous load on the server and ultimately crashed the server.

The server admin says that I need to get a dedicated server (wich i can't afford) or see if there is a program other than 4-images that is better suited for the amount of visitors i'm receiving.

Any suggestion? Maybe some changes to the script to reduce the server load, even if I have to disable statistics or any other feature.

Thanks for your help

I'm afraid, this has nothing to do with 4images... just multiply 5000 hits by average size of image
I believe, this high traffic is the only reason for provider complain.

The images on my site are no more of 200 pixels width.

Not the image size but the file size. SLL says that your provider is only complaining about the traffic your site produces and wants to force you into paying more by using a dedicated server or something.

Maybe server load could be reduced though - I don't know.

cheers,
Bernd

I know the bandwidth is a problem, but i already took care of that.

This is the message I received from the hosting provider:
Quote
From: support
To: me

We have just had to reboot our server again
The bandtwidth itself is not the problem however, the problem has  more to do with the script, and it not being totally suitable for the number of visitors that the site is receiving. Also, your site has been using 28% of the server's memory, and an average of 6 mysql processes, which is quite high.

We are unable to host this site on a shared environment as it is too resource intensive for the server. We recommend you getting a dedicated server for this site. Please let us know if we can assist you in getting a dedicated server.

Have you tried disabling the random inages?  Open includes/constants.php and you will find two lines for the random and random category images.  Set these to '0'.  That will reduce the load a bit.

Have you installed any mods?
