Last updated category on non gallery page

Hi guys,

im currently redeveloping my site, and I would love to be able to show a random image from the last updated category that links to the gallery category, but also shows the name of the parent category.

for example, if i have

The Assembly - Parent Cetegory
--Feburary
---Thursday 12th - Updated Category

I would want it to show,

The Assembly
<thumbnail img> - with direct link to the updated cat

but on the homepage which isnt part of the gallery

would be fantastic to get this going.
