[request] download statistic
« on: June 12, 2003, 10:56:05 AM »
hi all,
i know, there is a mod from Chris called:
Keep Track Of What Each User Has Downloaded (http://www.4homepages.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4606).

he has the following clarified:
Quote
Summary Description NOTE: This is NOT a download stats or counter mod

is someone able to create a mod doing exactly this?

it would be very helpful to know in addition:
- the exact date and time of download
- the name of the downloaded file

in my case it would be a hires-picture, because i want to set up a commercial archive.
finally i could attach a special logfile or a list with download timestamps to my invoice.

it is the general practice in this business.

many thanx in advance

p.s.: or does this mod already exist and i was not able to find it... :?:
Grüße, Lutz

lutz has it right in starting a new thread.  What's being asked for is a NEW mod and not a change to the mod that was mentioned.

This is a good idea!  Especially if you're a photographer selling high resolution digital file downloads.  It would also be useful if the user could access their download log from their control panel so they could always review what they've downloaded in the past.  Perhaps even to use this to re-download files again.

Overall this type of mod could probably be handled better by a commercial shopping cart which you integrate with 4images.  If you look for this type of solution, look for a cart system that is link based and does not require you to create a product catalog for it.  In other words something like PayPal, or MofCart (www.merchantorderform.com)  I know someone once posted details about how they integrated MofCart with 4images.   These type of carts can often also provide recall access to invoices, etc.

When the cart is link based, you can easily drive it by setting up the 4images templates.  IE:  Add a cart order form to details.html  This is what I do on my site.

well, your notion

...if the user could access their download log from their control panel...
would be a very good extension of such a mod!
you hit the crucial point of my idea (ooh, it´s not my idea, really not... )

but that:
Quote
this type of mod could probably be handled better by a commercial shopping cart...

is absolutely not necessary. far from it!
the usual way in selling pictures is to evaluate a price concerning the purpose of use of the downloaded image. there are many many factors who affect the value.
so you have to wait for a message like: "i have printed the picture in this ... magazin and that ... size with that ... print run" and so on...
but it´s going too far to explain the whole thing.

all you need is something as a logfile to document the download sessions (with filenames etc.).
i think the easiest way would be to analyze a "normal" serverlogfile and extract the special things to import in a field in 4image database??

so, what means this for the desired mod?
this is much simpler to code it, isn´t it?

...but not for me, i´m only a photographer and not a software engineer...

There is also a photographer's quotation mod available.  This might also help you get started.

the quotation mod seems to be closed and tucked away... (all links are dead), but that´s another story.
my (and others) archive will be integrated in an agency site. this means all things like newsletters etc. is to be arranged from there.
