most of them are already installed/compiled on your virtual server
such as GD, maybe IM, maybe NetPBM.
ask your host for this settings/paths, because YOU can't install them

you didn't say that your virtual server have NOTHING installed.

I am on a virtual private server and have to install my own image program.

only root can to that. you have this access? if yes.. then test them all, you will see what is for you the best..

my favorites: im, gd, netpbm

Your administration leaves a lot to be desired!  Definitely not worth going through the trouble of installing 4anything if this is the kind of support folks will get!
