Wow. 0 downloads of the install files... telling me no one has tried this 
Anyways, here are a couple of options for the front page.
Instead of showing the article "thumbs" in columns, like the New Images, this let's you put ONE article "thumb" in a row.
Open index.php
Find:
$num_new_articles = $config['article_cells'];
Change to:
$num_new_articles = $config['default_article_rows'];
What the above does is change from how many ACROSS will show TO how many DOWN will show. You can also place a hard number, like '10', instead of 'default_article_rows'.
Now go to your Admin CP/Settings and change the "Article table cells" to 1.
Now then...
You might also want to have one particular Article Category showing above the others, for example-
News
Then after that
Second
Third
Fourth categories, etc.
Find:
WHERE a.article_active = 1 AND c.cat_id = a.cat_id AND a.cat_id NOT IN (".get_auth_art_cat_sql("auth_viewcat", "NOTIN").")
Replace with:

This MOD is for creating Articles (typed text that can be News, Opinions, Articles, Blogs, etc) and Categories for them that are SEPARATE from the Image Categories.
What it does - It allows you to create Article categories to be displayed on the front page, and from there, create/write articles (or news, etc). The thumbnails of images are not used. Rather, the first piece of the Article, AKA the "snippet", is used as a thumbnail. It's stand-alone, so it does not interfere with the Image Categories and images. It does use comments that operate just like the Image comments. Editing, creation, deleting... all of it works just like the Image and regular categories.
Important - This MOD is not a full release yet. As the title of the thread says, it is a W.I.P. (Work In Progress). Feed back is needed, as I am requesting that you experts out there can look over the script(s) and see if there is any streamlining/clean-up that can be done. It IS fully functional as it currently is.
I also request that someone can make this Searchable.

What it does - It allows you to create Article categories to be displayed on the front page, and from there, create/write articles (or news, etc). The thumbnails of images are not used. Rather, the first piece of the Article, AKA the "snippet", is used as a thumbnail. It's stand-alone, so it does not interfere with the Image Categories and images. It does use comments that operate just like the Image comments. Editing, creation, deleting... all of it works just like the Image and regular categories.
Important - This MOD is not a full release yet. As the title of the thread says, it is a W.I.P. (Work In Progress). Feed back is needed, as I am requesting that you experts out there can look over the script(s) and see if there is any streamlining/clean-up that can be done. It IS fully functional as it currently is.

Ran into an interesting problem when validating User uploads- Validation changes upper case letters to lower case letters. With the Auto Image Resize/BIG MODS, this poses a problem, as the BIG (original) file remains as is if it has upper case letters. The resized image is changed to lower case.
The prob comes in when someone goes to download the file (or view in a new window... couple of MODS for that too). The upper case BIG file is not recognized, as it is "different" than the lower case shown image on the details page.
Admin Direct upload from the category page does not have this problem, since the image doesn't go through validation.
Is there a fix for this in validation so the file name remains as is and is not changed?

Problem... need Mod for this-
In the AdminCP, when using theEdit/Move to a different category OR using the Add Image functions, it is not moving (edit function)/uploading (Adding Images) the file to the BIG folder.
I have also manually moved the BIG file AFTER having moved a file (edit function) as well as ADDED the BIG file to the BIG folder for the correct category (Adding Images), BUT the DOWNLOAD link will not "read" the big file. EDIT: The problem is known but not solved. it was a case of CAPS vs lowercase in the file names.
Normal Member page upload into a category, everything works...as long as the image is NOT moved afterward to a different category! ...except one thing... It seems if the main upload file has caps in the file name, those are kept in the BIG file, but the RESIZED image is dropped to lower case. Is there a fix for that?
So a MOD add-on to the current MOD this thread discusses would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at a previous post in this thread regarding Validation to see if anything there will assist. Validation already has the BIG validated at the same time. The CAPS/lower case thing happened here in the User upload, which is where I noticed that.
ANOTHER EDIT: Just thought of something...can ImageMagick change the case of letters when resizing the image? Nope. Not it. Saw when Validating the image, the file name WAS in caps, but after validation, the resized image went to lower case while the BIG file stayed upper case. Changed from ImageMagick back to GD. Did a direct Admin upload and the upper case remained. So it is within Validation that the case is changed.

Keep in mind- With or without the av mods to the AJAX file, it did the same thing.
I am getting NO errors either way. It's just nothing showing, like the template code isn't declared somewhere or something.
