Site Name & Home Page large pic/small category pic layout
« on: July 12, 2006, 05:29:03 PM »
Extreme newbie. But I do look through forums before posting questions. I need very basic help.

--How do I remove 4Images logo & repalce w my site name in top left corner of all pages?

--How do I make home page display a single large pic, with three smaller category pics beneath it?

--I am trying to build a simple 5- or 6-page site. Visitors can submt pics, and pics will rotate out of the large main Home Page frame to one of the smaller three categories every day.

--Users can rate pics; only admin can select submitted pics for posting (or do anything else, for that matter.)

--Pics are archived every week.

1. Edit header.html in the template dir (/templates/default)

2. Category image can be done with this http://www.4homepages.de/forum/index.php?topic=6922.0 or this http://www.4homepages.de/forum/index.php?topic=3589.0 mod

4. Set Direct Upload to Administrators and Upload to All/Registered Users under Permissions when you edit a category from the admin panel. This way all images uploaded by users/guests has to get validated by you (admin) from your control panel)

Thanks for the fast reply...! Again, excuse my rookie status--this is learning a new language for me.

--When you say "edit the header" in #1...I dont know what specifically must be replaced w/my site name.

--Where is "global php" that must be opened in order to follow your #2 tip?

fyi I have version 1.7.2

Who/what could step me these early design stages ais as if I had no experience w code or building a site, which is the case?

you need to edit open home.html/details.html etc. And replace
Code: [Select]
<img src="{template_url}/images/header_logo.gif" width="405" height="60" alt="" /> with the logo you want to use. Or you can replace header_logo_gif with your own logo (image file)

I think you should try this first http://www.4homepages.de/forum/index.php?topic=3589.0 it's easier and works really well

Thanks again:

I found that code, but what do I do? Delete the whole line, or simply type the name of my site (I have no logo graphic) into a certain space?

I have never done this before so when you tell me to add or remove something, I need to know specifically what is excised and where new material is found.

When I go to the page you recommend, every step is another mystery....creating icons or images? How?  It's my first time. I think I'd be bretter off paying someone to do this, b/c like many things, it's simple -- but not the first time, on your own. Reading forums I see many details that a newbie needs are left out, and Im trying to do some very basic stuff here. This means back-and-forth posts for an unknown amount of time, and I dont have the energy for it....Thanks for trying.

Thanks again.

I have a specific site design in mind but need help on the technical side. All I know re: computers  is MS Word, multiplayer online gaming, surfing the web and e-mail.

4Images looks very easy but there is no clear step-by-step for someone like me, an old man.

I want to build a photoblog where users can submit their photos and rate other photos.

--A single large Photo of the Day on Home Page;

--Three smaller photos to the left side that link visitors to three different category pages;

--The three category pages will each have a large viewer frame(possible?) to the right, and a grid of 12 thumbs to the left. A simple mouseover on a thumb will fill the viewer frame w that photo. A click on a thumb will give you a fullscreen shot. This section will be archived weekly;

--Visitors can vote for Best Pics.

--A Submit Photo Page

--An FAQ page

--A Mission page

One thing I am emphatic about is that the pages will not require any scrolling up or down in order to see photos; everything will be fixed and centered so that navigating the site is smooth and effortless for visitors. Rollovers for a bigger view of the thumb, or clicks for a fullscreen, that's it -- no noodling around shifting left/right up/down with scroll bar.

How frustrating having the vision buit no experience w coding! I figures out how to make teh background color black, then got stuck on inserting Site Name and layout of photos.

gracias

haha yeah...that's great.

Or like this:

http://www.mexicanpictures.com/

with minimal unused space.

Perhaps the three smaller category links on the Home Page would look better lined up beneath it, as opposed to the side,

But I would use that on-the-side thumb layout on each gategory page -- a grid of 12 small thumbs w the mouseover feature to fill a right-side viewer frame.

Didn't take you too long, right? I need a tutorial on how to do each task so I can start work on this thing! I want to learn but have no PC friends.

Bart:

Since it will be a showcase for urban photography, the pix will do all the talking:

http://myopic.us/ (a nice of example of no-scroll loading)

http://www.waytoblue.org/index.cfm?action=current (nice big pic, just need my 3 links below....)

this one is really nice: http://www.travisruse.com/

Well, the problem is I did the design in some picture editing software. So what you see is not working at all (only a picture) but it could be done rather quickly.

Is 4images capable of reproducing the types of sites I sent you?

You're very proficient...what do you suggest next? I have no experience w code...

Will I be able to create:

--A full-size pic of the day on home page, w 3 category thumb links beneath

--Click on one of the 3 category thumbs & you go to page w/category Thumb grid, of 9-12 other photos, to left of page. Mouse over a thumb for full-size pic to appear in a viewer to the right. Click for a fullscreeen view.

--A Submit Pic page

--Brief photo Captions beneath photos?

--A clean, unobtrusive little Rate this Photo option

I want clean, easily navigated pages that require no scrolling for portrait/landscape images.

Are you a web designer/photographer/hobbyist? I take pix in NYC.
