Keeping your Template

Forgive me if this has been asked before. I am updating from 1.5 to 1.6.1 and I am wanting to make sure that I don't have to do all of my template work again.

Do the template files need to be replaced?? If so, how do I change the new template back to how I want it to look without it taking quite some time??
