http://tools.pingdom.comit helps show you in real time what takes the longest to load and file size and more. and its free. i've used it a bunch of times for my 4image gallery.
give it a try and post your best page load time.
miraculously my best time was 1.96 seconds which i've never gotten again.
my more recent time was 7 seconds but i need to undo an experimental mod and compress javascript and try to cut back on html and scale down the thumbnails.
