Appropriate size for thumbnails?

What do people think is the appropriate size for thumbnails? do you fixed the width, height, or proportionate - and by how much?

I am looking for comments in order to implement it on my gallery. I want it in clean, professional, and in an orderly fashion.

I played around with various sizes and ended up with fixed width of 150.

its all depence on your site lyout and the min screen resolution u want support (perfectly fit on one screen without needed scroll page left - right)
