Hi,
So here some samples:
The "default" : https://malay.vierstra.eu/nextgen/
Some colors: https://malay.vierstra.eu/
And another: https://istanbul.vierstra.eu/
Running on Apache / PHP 8.02
Only the database and data are used from the original, all php is new.
You can "side load" the new looks on your existing 4images installation without any modifications, send me a PM if you you want to try

It has been almost 20 years since I started with 4images...... 
I recently found some old backups and installed the "new" 1.8 and wanted to try things out...
4images works, kind of, on php 7.4, but generates a lot of errors.... (in the log if you have display errors off, other wise
)
I tried to look in the code, maybe I could debug it? But things got too difficult...
So, now I am building a new frontend, totally replacing the 4images frontend code, HTML5 and responsive (no tables anymore), just using the 4images database.. (and replacing the admin too, to make things easy)
It will not have the full functionality, the interactive part is not something I used on my sites anyway, but it will be a great gallery for images only for the time being. Other media types may follow later...
Yes I know, already in the old days people moved to flickr, and they are all on facebook and other "social" media now, but there are still many 4images sites active.....
Lets make the individuality return and 4images galleries great again, watch this space, soon!

No color or CSS changes, just layout, easy variable width, userbox removal, top/bottom change.
From the readme:
After creating 11+ templates in early 2002 its time to do something new.
This template is created from the basic 4images 1.7 template.
Unzip the file in your templates directory, and choose 4_default_wide
in the General/Settings section of the admin site.
1. Site width
To adjust the width of the site open the header.html from
this template and look for:
<table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center">
at the end of the file.
Change the 100% to whatever you like, can be 90% or 80% relative width, or change to 1024, 800 or something, pixel width.
2. Top appearance
To change the top logo and layout you only have to change one file:
searchbox.php in the incl directory of the template.
3. "Click Bar" appearance
The layout of the clickstream and top/new images table is in the
click_incl.php in the incl directory of the template.
4. "User box" appearance
The layout of the user box cell is in the
user_incl.php in the incl directory of the template.
5. Bottom appearance
To change the bottom table layout you only have to change one file:
bott_incl.php in the incl directory of the template.

Templates for 1.5-1.6 work also for 1.7 with some adjustments.
Copy the new pages:
- neu: member_editimage.html
- neu: member_deleteimage.html

from the default template to the template from www.vierstra.com
and it works, I will make a "doc" about it soon available on my site....
