thumbnail problem

I just installed the ver 1.6.  I can upload pictures, but I can't using any 'Auto-Thumbnailer'.  I try to go to setting and used GD.  It stated 'GD library error.'  Anyone can teach me how to make the auto thumbnailer stuff working? I try to go to ImagicMagic and Netbpm.  I don't know how to install either.  I think GD can do the same job as others, right? Please help!

*NIX:
1. GD must be compiled with PHP (GD 2.x can't make GIF files)
2. ImageMagick or Netbpm must be installed on your server.. (root access needed for it. ask your host for that.. or if installed, for the paths)

So, I need complied the GD by myself.  How to do it? is it any site to teach me?

also, if I want to install the other two program, is it I need to ask the host to install for me or I can do it by myself?

if this server is not your server you CAN'T install anything..

GD, ImageMagick, NetPBM must be installed from your Server ADMIN..

just ask them for it..

currently, my page hosted in a virtual server package.  So what is the easy way for me to make this auto thumbnail function again?  Is it a more to client way to handel it.
