Cannot set rights for "templates"

Hi!

I just installed everything, and it worked well. Now I wanted to do the next step and set the rights for "data" and "templates". With "data", no problem.
But if I want to change them for templates and the sub-directories, it says:

550 /www/rjo/galerie/templates: No such file or directory

550 default: No such file or directory
: /666 default

What am I doing wrong?

What program do you use for changing permissions?
Can you provide step-by-step how you do it?

Hi and thank you for your quick answer!

I tried it with two different programs (iMac, SnowLeopard), first with FireFTP, an FTP plugin for Firefox. I open my site, navigate inside the templates folder. Inside there are three folders, default, default_960px and default_full. If I right click one of those and choose "Properties", a window opens where I can set the properties. In the field "Manual" I enter "666" and press the "OK" button. Then a window opens that says:

550 /www/rjo/galerie/templates: No such file or directory

550 default_960px: No such file or directory
: /666 default_960px

After that I tried FileZilla. Again I navigate to the templates folder. Right click on that and then chose "Dateiberechtigungen", in the dialog that appears I entered 666 and the option to apply that on all subfolders. Then this is displayed:
