Hi
I have 1.0 and very happy about it

My question: is there a way to show more than 9 thumbnails in the category page.
I want to show at least 10 thumb without having to change page, ie, I dont want to see 1 2 >> Last page

go to admin panel , to settings and set your settings for 'Image settings' (Image table cells/Image table rows and Number of dropdown options)

I'm not sure if that feature is in the admin control panel for version 1.0

I know it's there for 1.5 and up.  Try anyway I suppose.
